    Fake PS2 Memory Card?

I bought a supposedly legitimate official Sony PS2 8MB memory card about 18 months ago from Ebay. Hadn't a reason to use it at the time, just bought as backup. Opened the correct looking factory packaging and the card looked OK too but felt (and was) a few milllimetres fatter than the other definitely genuine Sony PS2 memory cards I have.

It just won't format, the fit in my two fat PS2 v.3 and v.5 memory card slots is very tight and it doesn't click into place like the others do. It is unusable.

Everything about looks genuine, it is marked as Sony, all the printing and identity marks seem correct including the SCPH 10020 product ID, although the leaflet describe it as SCPH 10020 G.

What I was wondering is if the later slim PSTwo models used slightly different physical size cards (indicated by the G designation perhaps) which weren't compatible with older PS2s? I can't find anything about that online elsewhere so does anyone here have any info about this or how to identify for sure whether or not this is a counterfeit?

The fact it doesn't format is enough reason for me to believe it isn't real. Why get one on eBay though when you can get a legitimate one from Amazon for like a fiver? I've owned a few dodgy memory cards that looks reasonably official, which in my mind is what you have here.

Either fake or faulty that's for sure, I'm going to have to replace it in either case. The packaging seems to indicate it was made for the Korean market. But have you (or anyone else here) come across or know if Sony made slightly fatter design of official memory card than the originals?

There's no change in the molding of official memory cards over the duration of the PS2s life.

          Thanks.

It's the fact it is such a tight fit and the thing doesn't click into place - that's not like Sony even if there were later versions.

I've just ordered a couple of used clear red official cards via Amazon for less than ?10. I have one of those already so I know they should work OK if they haven't been abused. Worth the gamble at that price. I've not had any problem with used memory cards and that includes several DC and GC ones as well as one official PS2 card I've been using for years.

Not PS2 cards, but I bought some supposedly official memory cards online in the past, with 100% feedback on sellers' profiles, decent reviews etc but the goods were seemingly well made fakes. I didn't complain in time (probably couldn't be bothered) but it's very frustrating.

I should have checked the card worked when I bought it. No chance of getting my money back now. When I buy something as backup and don't need to use it immediately I always leave it sealed in the packaging. If you've bought something as official kit and it looks like official kit you trust it will work. Having said that the two items I particularly remember having to return to the sellers were both actually genuine official kit: Sony Dualshock controllers.Lesson learned.
