Super Famicom - Black and White

    Hi

I am trying to hook up my (switched) Super Famicom to an LG tv but the picture is only coming through in black and white. I've tried a different cable (same problem) but don't have a different tv to try. Is it likely to be a problem with the console? It worked fine last time I used it which was with a different tv but that was about 2 years ago

    Thanks for any help

Sounds like the TV doesn't accept NTSC through AV. It does 60Hz as you see the picture, but only handling PAL colour is a sign of the picture being b/w. You'd need an RGB out for it to be in colour.

      yeah definitely the TV

you can get an RGB modulator that will fix the problem but colours generally bleed around the screen

or just get a more modern tv which nowadays is buttons

Should be in colour regardless if using RGB.

Thanks. The TV is not that old which is why I was surprised (maybe 5 years). i get a black and white picture even if I switch the console to 50hz, the region to "Other" (I have options on the switch of "Other" and "Japan") and use a PAL cart.

In case you can't already tell, i'm not an expert in this area! :-)

If the TV is only 5 years then it should be fine

Only console I ever had this problem with was an import N64 just after they were released - bloody nightmare it was

            Always nintendo consoles causing problems

Are you using RGB? I can't see a 5 year old TV not putting it out in colour via RGB.

Maybe your AV sockets are set to "AV" or something.

I know my old Panny TV could let you set the SCART sockets to RGB/AV/S-Video for example.

it's a composite cable that has a scart adaptor (same b/w picture with or without the adaptor) so would I need to buy an RGB scart? if so, any recommendations? thanks

Try here if you need a new cable. PAL and NTSC cables are different mind.

Do you have multiple scart sockets??

Could be only one of the is RGB capable (Normally Scart socket 1 in my experience)

Ah, you'll need to get an RGB SCART cable. Composite into a SCART block is just a passive adapter for composite. Any from eBay should work well. Not sure if the caps need removing from a GC RGB cable though.

                            something like this?

although it says it the "PAL" version?

The only other cables i could find were things like this:

which is says is for a cube but my understanding is that it's the same connector

I used a PAL GC RGB cable with my Super Famicom with no problems.
