    Aopen or Shuttle

I was quite content with buying a shuttle pc until I read a very good review about Aopen's new cube XC thingy. Anyone know which is better? For heavy general use really.

    Cheers.

The shuttle cubes are a known quantity. They're reliable (mostly) and if you have any issues there's a massive online community to call upon for advice.

The same can't be said for the Aopen.

I'm not saying it's not as good, just offering something to consider.

Cool, cheers for the advice. I think they are pretty much identical in spec so I'll probably go with the Shuttle.

Oh, one more question. I have a Geforce 3 Ti 200. Should I stick with that to provide the graphics or should I pay the extra ?11 and get NVidia nForce2 IGP with the shuttle.

        Cheers

As it's only ?11 extra you might as well get the onboard.
It can be disabled and a backup video device is always nice.

Which particular models of Shuttle are you looking at?

              Did you consider the SN45?

Well, while there's a thread here already about these Shuttle things, I may as well post my question... I look at the specs on these things, and it makes my head hurt and my nose bleed.

Can anybody tell me of somewhere I can find one of these with processor, memory and HDD already installed, and preferably with a half-decent bit o' graphics kit? Or does that kind of thing just not happen? I don't mind putting the rest of it together, but I cannot be arsed with bolting motherboards into cases, then putting PSUs on, then fannying about with heatsinks and what have you.

I've got a cd writer, I've got an ADSL modem, I've got a sound card, I've got my own OS's (all legal and above board, of course), all of which I'll keep. If anybody can find me a little ol' shuttle PC which already has all the hard bits in place, I'll love you forever*.

I don't want to play games on it, I'm not interested in future expansion, I just want it to stay the course for three or four years. That being the case, I'm thinking 1800 or better, and my only graphics hardware requirement is that it's capable of displaying Linux and Windows XP. A 80+ hard drive would be nice, but to be honest I'd struggle to fill 30. If decent onboard graphics can't be done, then what's the cheapest and nastiest generic AGP card I can still easily buy?

Can anybody help a poor old hardware hater out?

                * in a strictly platonic and friendly way

Yashiro - From what I have read on the interent, apparently the more expensive one has a slightly better on board graphics processor. Its only ?11 too so I don't mind.

DaiSuki - I haven't come across anywhere that builds the shuttle for you but both the ones featured in this thread come with the motherboard, psu and onboard graphics all fitted. All you have to do it pop in a processor, a hd and a disk drive. It is really simple.

                    Splendid, splendid...

So; I'll be OK picking out a hard drive, I should imagine. A floppy I can live without... got a USB one lying around somewhere if I need it. Which leaves the processor. I have no idea what those boards can and can't take, so more help required, I'm afraid... what's the lowest to highest spec processors that the shuttles in this thread will take?

..oh aye, I'm assuming I need RAM as well, so same question applies

                    Cheers in advance...

Well, RAM I would always get from www.crucial.com/uk as they regarded very highly. On their website they have a RAM selectio sytem, where you just put what type of mother you have in and it will bring up all the matching types of RAM.

For processors you have to decide whether you want Athlon (cheaper, also what I own) or Intel (the big brand). Both the shuttle pcs above are Athlon shuttles. You can get anything from a 1.9 ghz for ?40 to a 3.0 for ?174. Intel goes from a 1.7 ghz at ?46 to a 3.2 ghz extreme edition for ?750.

                            Just one more question.

Can you take an existing hd with all the old settings on it, then wack it in a new pc (new mobo) and just tamper with the setting when it boots up rather than formatting it. I forget......

                            Cheers
