Slow boot-up and access problems with used Xbox 360 250GB HDD

i've just upgraded from my 120GB HDD to a 250GB HDD. it's used but original Microsoft and has been freshly formatted. now after transferring content i am experiencing massive boot times (40 - 50 seconds) and generally slower access.

is this normal with larger capacity 360 HDDs?

i've found that formatting the HDD via the 360 menu just does a quick format because it's done in a matter of a seconds. i fear the drive may just be heavily fragmented and since the system doesn't seem to care i have no other option than to get me a new HDD.

anyone made similar experiences and has some advice for me?

Have you tried clearing the system cache?
