Anyone got any recommendations for a wireless mouse/keyboard device that can be used from the sofa? Been looking at a few but would be great if anyone has one they rate could tell me about it. Needs to have a long range as the PC is in a rack in another room.

As an alternative or temporary substitute while you're deciding, have you tried using a smartphone/tablet?
I use a free iPhone app called Hippo Lite which turns the phone into a keyboard and trackpad over wifi and has all the keyboard keys I need(incl. arrow keys). All it needs is VNC software running on the PC.
Of course, the usefulness depends on what you'll be typing/clicking on and you can't enjoy Counterstrike this way but I completely stopped using my wireless keyboard/mouse once I got that app, especially as I had a remote control for media duties. You can also use the PS3 bluetooth remote on Windows.
As an added bonus you can also get a proper VNC viewing app to view/control the PC while you're watching TV or in another room. I've done this a few times, queuing up videos to buffer while I'm cooking or on the bog. -
