    Is my graphics card dead?

A little while ago I bought a second hand AMD 7970. Naturally, as the 90 day warranty ran out on it a few days ago, it has decided to die on me.

It all looks fine, the fans spin when I turn on the PC, but it's not outputting a picture and the built-in Intel 4000 graphics chip is kicking in instead.

I was able to borrow a 7950 from my brother and that works fine in the same slot. I also tried both cards in there connected for crossfire, but the 7970 isn't detected and there is no option for crossfire in the catalyst control centre, it just shows the 7950.

Unless there's something I haven't thought of, I assume the card is probably dead and I'm gonna have to get myself a new card?

Does the card show up in the system list of components? (assuming you're on Windows).

Could try it in your brothers PC but don't know if there is much else you can do sorry.

I might give that a go but it looks like it's knackered. It didn't appear in the device manager when I had it plugged in at the same time as the 7950. I've taken it out and re-inserted it a few times, tried it in a different PCI express slot, tried DVI, displayport and HDMI cables with it... just can't get a picture whatever I try. Bummer!

At least it's a legitimate excuse to buy a snazzy new card, but I really don't feel like spending the money at the mo.

Everything looks fine and dandy, no dust, can't see anything wrong with the connector at all. It's baffling.

As I said though it was second hand so I suppose it could have had a problem that, unluckily for me, didn't rear its head straight away.

Ordered a new card to get delivered on the 28th though, so I won't be stuck with Intel 4000 graphics for too long!

Put in in an oven and cook it, honestly it bought back an 8800gtx for me a year or so back

Could be worth a try. I also did that to my 8800GTX.

Thing is though, modern GPUs shouldn't have crap solder so I'm not sure how effective it will be..

Aren't we all supposed to be using lead-free solder now or have they got it all sorted now after the xbox 360 debacle?

                  Thanks for the tip, Nigella

I might give it a go but I'm not sure I'll bother. New card arrives tomorrow so even if I did revive the old card with the oven trick, I've got no use for it now, and I wouldn't feel comfortable selling it on here or to CEX after it had been brought back from the dead.

Put it in the "its for free thread" in the blue forum and spread a little bit of temporary joy (if you get it working)

oh btw if you do decide to try the oven method, dont do like the guy on the video does at the end. Switch the oven off and let it cool down very slowly
