Halo online multiplayer with friends

I've been trying to play Halo 3 online with my housemate. We both have our own consoles and live accounts but cannot get into the same game no matter which lobbies we pick. We have resorted to playing on the same console split screen which is pretty crap.

Is there a way to pick specific games in the lobby or partner up? Sending friend invites doesn't work as all it does is create a game that we are both in but nobody else joins.

If not, do any of the other Halo games allow this?

Team games should be fine but if you wanna play against each other then I don't think you can get into the same game unless by luck.
Private games too but I'm guessing you want full games

I should have said, team games (same side) is what we want to play and we just can't do it as there doesn't seem to be a way to browse the lobbies and join the same game.

It's been awhile but don't you join up before you go into multiplayer? Like a lobby in your game menu's?
If evil Boris is online message him, he plays halo a lot so may be able to point you in the right direction

Why don't you just play via LAN?

You have to be in the same Party in Halo 3

Not the chat party, but the game party.
Once you are in the same party you will all appear in the same list in most of the multiplayer menus, from here the party leader can choose a playlist or gametype and all players will play in that game.

It should look something like this


This is a party of 8 friends in the custom game lobby, change the lobby to matchmaking and then you will be playing against other people.

I got this working finally. It turns out I'd already done everything correctly but never saw the little button called "start matchmaking". I'd feel more stupid if Halo's menu system wasn't designed by the legally blind. Thanks Boris and everyone who answered.

Are you sure you and your housemate aren't legally blind?

25% of the options available is Start Matchmaking
