    Router and msn troubles

For a while now i've had trouble with sending and receiving files on msn. With some people it always works flawlessly with others my router just locks up as soon as they accept a file or i accept their file. It also just happened when someone invited me to a game of noughts and crosses!!

My router is a D Link DSL 504, if thats any help.

It's a known issue with the firmware that ships with the box. I had it too...

I'm not really clued in on how NAT routers work beyond hand waving theory but I could reproduce the same issue when I tried to send/receive from someone else with a NAT based router (i.e. pretty much every modern broadband router) but it worked fine otherwise.

I *could* guess that the lockup was related to something that NAT does to packets... uPnP which is a kind of dynamic port forwaring thingy is also a possible cause.

Basically I never got a decent explanation, just a fix.

that google search was semi-helpful but you'll need to track down the firmware from D-Link yourself. If you email them they'll send it to you.

I've looked on D Links FTP server for firmware before, but haven't got a bloody clue what revision of the 504 it is!

Your best bet is to email them with your router's serial number...

An alternative would be to use the firmware update utility that comes with the router if you're running windows... Apparently it doesn't let you flash the eeprom with a dodgy file.

I daresay your router is revision B if that's any help!

          Current Firmware Version R2.21.002.06.b2t10uk
          ADSL driver Version 1.3.5.03182002.0001

Thats what i've got atm, so i'll email them and see what they say.

On the bottom it does says Vers B1.

I've had it for ages and just blamed msn messenger as it only started happening once msn messenger 6 came out.

I tried the revision b firmware from their ftp site and just got upload failed

I got my router around the same time MSN6 came out and afaik it IS what trips up the software in the router.

I'd send you the firmware I used buy MY PC died a while back and I the only image of my OS I had was from July and said firmware was not in my downloads folder :S

They replied and had two optioms of either sending me a middle step firmware to fix the upload failed and then using some more firmware to correct it, or forwarding ports 6891-6900 and disabling UPnP. So i did the latter as a quick fix and it worked straight away
