New monitor - what's it all about?

I've got that Dell 22" IPS. Coming from a 4:3 17" LCD, it seems quite a step up.
    Questions:
I'm using VGA 1920x1080 - it supports "displayport". What's the advantage of this? (My gfx card doesn't have it - just wondering).
Now that I have 22" monitor are there any cool apps I need to run in a sidebar (windows 8 but don't use metro).
If I get bored with everything now being tiny, what's my best option to resize. In FF I can press ctrl-+ but that obviously doesn't affect anything else.

DisplayPort is digital connection, thougth specifically for computers. It has some great advantages, especially for multi-monitor environments. I currently use three DP ports (out of four) on my videocard to connect two monitors and a Cintiq.
Anyway, why still on VGA? Go at least DVI.

I don't have a DVI cable (my old monitor only had VGA). My gfx card does have dvi though. Cheapest cable I can find presumably is fine for dvi?

Yeah, as with all digital cables, they either work or don't.

Windows 8 has built in font scaling which you set alongside the resolution, it typically defaults to a slight zoom on a 1080p monitor anyway, although some older software can look a bit odd with it on.
