    Need replacement Xbox DVD Drive.

Does anyone know where the best place to get a replacement XB DVD drive from is? Mine died a couple of days ago. It hadn't been the best of drives from day 1, and struggled to read loads of discs. It finally gave up while playing top-spin.

I've found a couple of places online, but they all seem to be out of stock apart from a US based place called llama. Anyone had to use these companies in the past, and if so, what have they been like to deal with?

I'm not too fussed about waiting a bit. I do want a genuine xbox drive though, not really after a butchered PC one with a power-splitter or a soldering job etc.

Any advice appreciated, although I doubt many of you will of needed a drive yourselves.

      Thanks for the info.

Hmm, just checked their site and although they do spares, no mention of a DVD drive anywhere on there. I've sent them an email anyway, but in the meantime, anyone know of anywhere else?

Only compatible with Thompson DVD drives, and mine is a Samsung.

Ah well, thanks for trying. I'm probably just gonna have to take a chance with llama.com, even though they are stateside. They are the only company to have any drives in stock at the moment anyway. premodded are out-of-stock. Damn xbox is gonna be b0rked over christmas if I don't get one now. *sigh*

You can place PC DVD drives into your xbox you know. Do a search at xbox-scene to find out which ones.

I thought that you could only use non MS DVD Drives if you were running anything but games on the Xbox.

Yeah, I looked into using a PC drive, but it's messy. You either:

Need to leave the xbox drive in there with the yellow power wires still plugged in, and have the PC drive hanging off the end of an IDE cable externally,

                or

Pull the drive apart and solder the wires into the power circuits.

Only certain brand drives work properly, and you need to flash them.

Basically, I can't be bothered with all that as it will only save me about ?15 anyway. Main problem with getting genuine xbrick drivesd is availability. Ah well, I should get hold of one before christmas hopefully.

Have you tried the xbox scene or world xbox forums?
