No way man. It's all rose tinted specs. Throw your CRTs in the bin now!
(Still have my Sony 4:3 CRT )

Nasty- i remember picking them up for ?25 each....

A modded wii is probably the cheapest option (with an official wii component) for playing GC ntsc games. I always found the GC official component cable and a GC to output a slightly better image though.

How easy is it to get ntsc gc games running on a Wii? Apologies am a Wii homebrew no idea person.

This. Like I said, soft-modded Wii + Wii Component Cable = How I play NTSC GC games nowadays. I only have a standard RGB cable for my Panasonic Q so playing GC games on it looks considerably inferior in comparison.

It is a piece of p1ss. Easier, even.

Nintendo stopped bothering to update the Wii System Menu a LONG time ago. Google is your friend here.

I meant 480p on the CRT. I've never seen 480p look as good on a 37"+ flat screen compared to a CRT. It just looks blurry to my eyes. I'm talking panny, sammy and LG plasmas/lcds

Can you use wii controllers/pads for the GC games on a wii or do you need a gc controller as well?

Nope. GC controllers only for GC games on Wii.

Not allowed to link to anything on this forum, but the process is actually extremely simple. Google for something called 'Letterbomb' (make sure your Wii is updated), this is an exploit that will install the Homebrew Channel to your Wii. From there, you can install a program called GeckoOS - this will let your load any region game, both GameCube and Wii.
The more adventurous people can also install something called StartPatch. This will patch your system menu so that your entire console will be region free right from the system menu. But if that sounds scary, GeckoOS works perfectly fine.

As others have said, a softmodded Wii + component cable makes the most sense for region free GameCube. It's cheaper, and you can also use all the cool emulators for the Wii, making it the perfect little retro box.

Most Wii games look gash in 480p, due to over zealous softing. Some ps2 stuff looks great though

Just rediscovered my gamecube collection while rooting around in the attic, thinking I might dig it out to get my smash bros fix while I wait for the release. Seeing as it's a PAL Gamecube and I only have the standard video cable is it worth me trying to get a component cable for this purpose or should I hunt for an RGB scart?

You'll be lucky to find a component cable. You can easily buy a second hand Wii and component cable for a fraction of what a GC cable will cost. Just make sure you get an older Wii and softmod it to NTSC.

There are only a handful of PAL GC games that support 480p so SCART is probably the best option for you although with a softmodded Wii you should be able to force many games to NTSC.

it was interesting reading this thread. I have a GC and Panny Q with both the modded RGB cable and Component.

Admittedly, I've never had a 480p capable CRT, but on my plasma via component @ 480p vs. Sony BVM via RGB SCART. I much prefer the RGB Scart + BVM solution...

Thanks for the info, RGB scart looks like the solution for me and my PAL games. Out of interest has anyone experienced a PAL
gamecube running on an LCD with both RGB and Component? I just wonder without the 480p output what a component output looks like compared to an RGB scart.

Erm, I'm pretty sure that's false - PAL GC games only support 480i and 576i. 480p GC games are very much NTSC-only.
