Tokyo Jungle - map?

Hmm, this might well have gone in the game discussion thread, nevertheless.

Just acquired the awesome Tokyo Jungle. However despite going through the tutorial etc. I'm still unsure of the basic point of the game - is it essentially to take over every territory? I mean I love beating a golden retriever to death as much as the next man, but is that the idea - to survive? Also - and my main qualm - is the map supposed to be so bloody useless? I can never tell where I am and I cannot scale/move the map, even in the menu.

Don't get me wrong I love the game, it just seems I can never tell where I bloody am! Anyone have any tips?

The point is to survive. It is not that big so just play and you will get to know the map pretty easily. Just keep surviving and picking up the story mode bits, and then do the story mode until it is done - then go back to survival to get the memory sticks and practise some more. i loved the game.
