ChromeCast - is it worth it and what is it capable of?

    ANSWERS! NOW!

I'm looking at getting one of these for my pre-smart tv..

    Have you got one?

    Is it good?

    Can I hack it?

Is it likely to become self aware any time soon?

Yes it's excellent for the limited tasks it can perform.

Netflix, iplayer and YouTube all run wonderfully, I got one for my girlfriends old plasma, the wifi there is atrocious but there's been very few problems.

You can now mirror your android screen, though I Havnt tried this as my device (Xperia z1) isn't supported yet.

Yes, just to echo the above - awesome little device. I bought one when they came out a few months ago (which netted me ?5 in free Play credit \o/). Very simply to set-up, can be powered from your TV's USB potentially saving need for the included AC Adaptor.

Compatible apps in the UK is minimal so unfortunately no 4OD, ITV Player or Flixster, but I've used PLEX and streaming from Chrome in addition to the above and have been suitably impressed with them all. Using it mainly with two iPhone 5S's and it works well. So much so that this in tandem with my RasPlex loaded Raspberry Pi will mean I can sell the Apple TV on.

Apparently NFL GamePass HD will use if from this season, so that might be another reason to get one. I haven't tried my Google Nexus 7 on it, or running and 'casting' apps.

Wish I'd known about the screen casting when the $20 play credit offer was on. I'll wait for that to come around again I think.

?5 free credit deal is still on for a few more days I believe. In the UK obviously.

Good news! It's a bargain at ?30 even before this.

I haven't noticed a Netflix lip sync issue, but in the main I've done most of my Netflix viewing on the PC or Nexus. But we did watch The Mist via this method and it was fine (I normally notice if speech is out of sync too).

Thanks all. Still not sure, as there doesn't appear to be that many apps in the UK.. Hmmm.
