    Weird Program launch thing.

Ok, I turned on my pc today, and I've got this thing that starts up. It is called power scan. It says: Clean your PC from all Porno or something. The .EXE is only 67kb, and I'm unwilling to click it. I haven't installed anything personally, but it is in my start up programs and launches with the PC.

I haven't got a clue what the powerscan.exe is, and I certainly haven't downloaded anything recetly. I don't know, it may be a virus or something... I had a weird pop up and some weird site kept asking me to install a dialer among other things and the internet explorer window that this was comming from wouldn't open. It was titled: 'this is what I woke up to this morning'. I don't know what it going on really. But my family uses this PC so they could have done something stupid without me knowing.

What MS program or thing is it where you can click on and off which programs you allow to start on launch... I'd turn this off, so that no one can try to run it and I can delete it all from my system...

To be frank, I don't knwo exactly what is going on and what to do exactly, so I think that I'll stop it from running and delete it and hope that's ok...

    Any suggestions - Thanks.

MSCONFIG. You may or may not have this prog depending on your windows version. XP has it as standard, and it's a part of the win2k resource kit.

Do windows-r to bring up a run... box and then just type msconfig

This will allow you to selectively start-up, but it will nag every time you boot that you are running in this manner. A better fix if it's loading at boot is to remove the entry for it in the system registry.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run

Look under that key, and find the entry, then delete.

If the program is classed as spyware of any type, SpybotSD will remove it. You can get that from http://www.safer-networking.org/ . Excellent prog.

What version of windows are you running btw? If it's 2000 or XP pro, make sure that your admin password is set to something strong, and your Windows file/printer sharing is disabled over your net connection.

You should also get a firewall like Zone Alarm. This program will block these programs from automaticly downloading, opening new IE windows and stop it getting any access to the internet.

And I can't recommend AVG virusscan enough. It's free (updates incl.) and has saved my PC on several occasions.

        Get it here: http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php

        ZoneAlarm Firewall is fantastic too.

Lol, it does work though! Somehow, and I haven't got a ****ing clue why, it appeared on a PC at college. My mate logged on and it came up with this program, so we clicked 'search' (a bit of harmless fun, you know) and it came up with loads of porn cookies and temp files! We were like . So my mate, who's a bit of a cheeky boy with PCs, went and saw who was on that PC at that time, and then we got his name and form and told our teacher lol . Our computing teacher is sound, and it was funny.

          Oh how we laughed.

Hesitation about running it? Erm, why would you want to remove porn from your PC?

Popup Killer stops these things from getting installed in the first place. They're normally installed through ActiveX plugins via IE. You can prevent these using that app (and various others - I've found this to be the best so far). They'll pop up with a message box, often the wording makes it look like you're cancelling something - or accepting something you want to download. Pain in the neck, I've been caught out a couple of times, and it takes bloody ages removing it again.

            Regards
            Marty

Argh, that's why I've been getting these problems. I've disabled Zone alaram to get my LAN working, and since then I've been having these similar issues. I forgot about that!

Thanks. I'll start downloading the other programs now!

              Thanks a lot!
