if you have usb 2 you would be able to copy a 600mb file in about 3-4 mins.

I have "USB 2.0 Root Hub" under the Universal Serial Bus controllers in device manager. Now I would imagine if you don't have one of those you don't have USB 2.0 although it that might have something to do with my front USB ports.

If you don't have that I am pretty sure you don't have USB 2, but you do however get an upgrade!

You can get this 5 port version Belkin Hi-Speed USB 2.0 5-Port PCI Card or go for the 2 port version Belkin Hi-Speed USB 2.0 2-Port PCI Card, Low Profile Version

        Hope this helped

I have USB 2.0 ports, but what's displayed in Device Manager must be dependent on the chipset.

I think my USB 2.0 is displayed as VIA USB Enhanced Host Controller (but there's 12 entries for USB in my DM)

The most reliable way would be to go look up your motherboard specifications.

thanks for all your help, i think i must have 1 or 1.1 as i'm using a dell laptop thats about 3-4 years old. Does anybody know whether this will be ok for downloading to an ipod, as in the ipod spec it says USB 2. cheers

Yes - USB2 is backwardly compatible with USB1, just means you won't benefit from the higher transfer rate.
