    PC upgrade time :)

    Current spec:

    Q9550
    6GB DDR 2
    250 SSD
    HD 6870
    CORSAIR HX620w PSU

So, what's the current 'q6600' for cpu's then in terms of price/performance?

Also in regards to cards? I see ati have moved to an nvidia type naming scheme (280?). I'm guessing the 280 is the sweet price point card?

Need help haven't upgraded in ****ing years dude.

What board, memory, etc. Hit me!

Wondering if my psu will even be enough now.

    That would be the 4670K.

Then I'd grab 8 or 16GB of RAM, a board that supports socket 1150 and a GeForce GTX 770.

The PSU should be fine really. I run a 520W BeQuiet PSU with similar spec.

      Not an i7 then, speedy?

And what ram and board would you suggest? I always go asus as they've proven solid.

Thinking I need a new case too now and definitely a monitor. Holy ****. Might have to do this gradually.

RAM I get whatever is cheapest from Corsair and for motherboard whatever is cheapest with a good chipset from Gigabyte.

Get an i7 if you plan to do lots of video editing or other kinds of editing. Otherwise not much difference performance wise. The i7 is more akin to your Q9550 rather than the Q6600.

Going through the intel cpu's now.

This is genuinely the most ****ED UP numbering system they've ever used. Absolutely pathetically bad. About a thousand different names for i5 to i7 with different versions (ivy and haswell) to make things extra confusing.

          Seriously wtf.

What happened to q6600, q6800 and so fourth. This is just a ****ing mess.

Yes PC upgrading isn't cheap by a long shot sadly.

Chip numbers etc are a bit of a mess as we're on the 4th iteration of i3, i5, i7 chips already.

What sort of budget you looking Kit.

and the price of ddr4 memory ouch

My next upgrade plan to go to a z97 and either a 4670 or a 4790 was thinking about a z99 but the processors and ddr4 memory just far to expensive

There were tons and tons of Core 2 Quad kit.

There is always two options for the enthusiast - the best i5 and best i7 - in price performance terms.

This gen it is the 4670K and 4770K.

I'm just getting a rough idea first then I'll start the inevitable (but slightly fun) cost cutting.

                  So far I'm eyeing this:

i7 4790 (Haswell). Seems like a beast of a cpu plus it's around the same price as my q6600 when I got that.

Need help with the board and ram, gents. Triple channel won right? I know things got a bit ****ed up between dual and triple when the 920 came out.

                  3GB 280X seems a safe bet.

Keeping my case, got a decent cooler in my trusty zalman also.

This will probably be way off but I'm liking this monitor too.

Obviously not from overclockers, though. Shower of ***** they are.

ugh, ignore the triple channel comment I guess it didn't take off lol

                      So I'm after a Z97 board.

What's this dual channel vs quad channel stuff?

                      Someone explain?

                        Too much to list, dude.

Highlight was buying a monitor off them which had a major fault, it took six months for them to replace it - so I had to buy another monitor while waiting. No refund, instead I got a replacement which wasn't actually new it was a refurb. ****ing shocking.
