    PC upgrade

My old desktop from about 4 years ago looks like it's getting a little slow when trying to run games at high settings smoothly.

    Basic Current setup:
    i5 760
    Gtx 570
    8gb ram
    PSU I think is 650w

I'm trying to use most of the current pc I have now but also coming to the realisation that my motherboard isn't compatible with the newer intel CPUs.

I definitely want to stick with an intel cpu. My i5 760 is really showing it's age. I don't over-clock so don't think I'll be needing a k class cpu. This also means my motherboard would need changing to the LGA 1150 socket type.

My ram is decent enough to keep. So won't need to buy any.

I'm looking at the Gtx 970. I'm pretty sure this would be a significant improvement over the 570. Apparently the 970 uses less power than the 570. Does that mean my PSU 650w won't need upgrading?

So all in all it looks like if I were to upgrade I'd need a new cpu, new motherboard and a new graphic card.

My main question is, what's a fairly cheap but decent motherboard that can use the newer intel CPUs and fit a Gtx 970?

    Help appreciated.

what motherboard are you using at the moment ?

Would hold up on the graphics card front as with the new gtx970 released and AMD cutting the price on there cards i reckon there will be other things happening

Well too late.. I didn't hang about with buying some stuff.

      Bought these 3 things:

gigabyte z97x gaming 3 ( for the cpu ) My current motherboard is too old to use the newer chips.
      i7 4790k
      Gtx 970

I was keen on getting the Nvidia card rather a AMD one. Been with Nvidia the last 10 years and served me well. My 570 compared to this 970 is a massive step according to everyone. Seems like a good deal.

Nice trio of bits there Supergoal, should be a major step up graphically.

Glad to hear it. As always I get nervous before committing to a fairly expensive purchase but I'm confident it's time to upgrade. 3 generations later.

Run a demanding graphics benchmark like this one

on the "1920x1080 HD" preset before and after the upgrade to justify the upgrade a bit more

Then put an old Source game on, put everything on maximum, unlock v-sync and watch the FPS in the hundreds ans smile.
Then spoil it all by putting Arma 3 on, everything on max and watch it crawl and then cry.

                similar to my PC:

                Gigabyte Z97X G1 Black Edition
                4790k
                2x R9 295x2
                64GB DDR3 2400
                4x Samsung 840 Evo 500GB (RAID 0)
                Corsair AX 1500i
                Corsair 760T case
and some Red LED's to finish it off!

Mines in the similar ball park but with a 770 instead of 970 and literally nothing has remotely flinched it no matter how hard it's pushed or advanced the tech demo/benchmark. You're home free

Out of curiosity how does that i7 4790k perform for you?

Very well, easily overclocked with that board too 4.8Ghz with minimum fuss.
