Which Broadband provider do I choose?

We're moving house and we need to get a new provider, as our current one (Virgin) now only do Fibre, and the property can't get fibre, only ADSL.

So, which do people recommend out of:

    >> BT
    >> PlusNet
    >> Sky
    >> EE
    >> TalkTalk

Couple of things; I have no interest in television services, no matter how much discounted- even if I got Sky free with their broadband, I probably wouldn't use it.

I also would like an unlimited package of some description as I really cane Netflix.

Why can't your new property do fibre?

Unsure if you know this but predominantly most people with fibre like myself still have the last part of the route over copper

Drop line either from a telegraph pole or a newish DP which is just outside the front of the house

Speaking from a BT employee point of view it also depends on where you live, if you choose BT you will have to see how far the house is from the exchange as you might be in an Exchange only (EO) area which means you will not have super fast broadband until the new all in one DSLAM cabinets get erected, since your services are fed directly from the exchange OLT/OCR racks

As a customer I've got BT infinity and its hit or miss, yarring is fantasticly fast but just surfing it's tedious, unsure if there is a problem with my ping or latency but surfing is slower than normal broadband and I find myself a lot of the time refreshing the page to help it along

I went with PlusNet in the finish, based on some online recommendations and their (so far) excellent customer service.

They stated they could do Fiber too, though no idea if it's "fiber to the kerb" or "fiber to the house" as you mention, Buster.

Either way, it's all sorted now.

Around 90% of the country using BT and pretty much all communications providers except Virgin (they install their own) have fibre but it comes from the exchange straight to a DSLAM (green cabinet you see in the street) close to your house and the final part of the route is via copper and that's standard, speeds are up to 80/20 which I have

Nowadays with modern houses as long as they enter an agreement with BT and the communications providers like plus net they can fit fibre to the premise into the house as its being built which can give you speeds up to 330 and generally the fibre comes into your house either beside the front door or under the stairs

They are trialling voice over fibre which is the next step with fibre coming from telegraph poles in armoured cable but copper will never be replaced or removed in my lifetime

We've been quoted a max speed of 66, though naturally that's an estimate. Our current connection with Virgin at this property is terrible, so it'll almost certainly be better.

Let be honest 66 is plenty

I get 82 when connected to the router via my Ethernet cable or around 38 wireless but I was getting between 6-8 before I got the upgrade so can't complain

The most annoying thing is that Virgin have insisted that I have to pay ?20-odd to cancel my phone connection in my current house, as I can't "migrate" my account over to the new one, what with changing providers. They say this is a charge from BT, as someone needs to come out to disable the phone line.

This irritates me as I had assumed it'd be free (my Virgin contract has been on month-rolling for a long time now).

Seems fishy to me but being honest when it comes to BT global I don't have a clue

They sub contracted my upgrade to Kelly's and he made an plop of it and cross connected me and a noise 4 doors down and when I called to tell them it wasn't working they were going to charge me ?130 for a repair if it was on my premises

The mondsu came and the guy had cross my pair of copper lines with another house so an easy fix

Glad to see you've avoided Talktalk. They're abysmal.
