The ATI cards benchmark better than the NVidia cards when comparing 2 cards of similar price, although the difference is hardly substantial.

As people have mentioned, the nvidia cards don't offer true DX9 functionality although as games these days aren't really taking advantage of many DX9 features, most gamers won't notice a difference.

Nvidia driver support has traditionally been better than ATI although that's not much of a problem these days.

There really isn't much in it. Most gamers will be perfectly happy with whichever card they choose. I bought a Radeon 9600 Pro and it's excellent. That said, I didn't think twice to recommend an Nvidia card to a mate who saw one in a sale at PC World.
