JPN N64 - broken or incorrect signal?

I dug my N64 out the other day but when I plugged it in I got a distorted screen with normal sound.

I tried a different cable (scart and s-video) and the same thing happened (was RGB modded)

At first I thought it was just knackered but looking at the screen and the way it's distorting I wondered if it was actually that my HD TV couldn't accept the signal properly

Am I just being crazy with this thought?

I know things can just break but the way the picture and sound is it's almost like the old days when you turned on your SNES when you were watching TV and you got this weird scrolling effect from having 2 signals.

could be the TV (i had a similar problem), or a cold solder joint on the board/faulty connector

try it on a crt and start eliminating issues

Problems like this are why proper RGB mods are needed.

Hopefully that is all it is.
