Chipped PS2 not playing PS1 games

    Hi All,

I picked up a modded PS2 in the trade forum, I was hoping to use it to play PS1 games but I'm not having much luck.. I was told it had a Modbo 4.0 installed but I'm struggling to get into the setup menu to see what's been set.. on previous machines I have had you needed to hold down the Triangle and Circle buttons when booting but it's not working on this machine.. Google leads me to believe that this should work on a Modbo 4

When I stick in either a JAP or US PS1 disk I just get a message saying there is no data..

Any ideas on how to get into the chip menu on one of these?

Its a slim model 9004, originally a PAL machine..

Just incase it's a different chip, have you tried double tapping reset?

In early mod chips you had to double tap reset to use multi-region modes for DVD and PS1 games...

Bingo! Yeah that worked! I double tapped reset and the PS1 game started up, so no idea what type of chip is actually in it now..

It wouldn't play any DVDs either so tried to double tap the reset button and that helps, it will play region 2 but still won't play region 1 DVDs at all as I get the region warning.. kind of a pain..

Does that give any more clues to what chip it is?

Modbo 4.0 will boot everything automatically.

Sorry mate, no idea. But at least the double tap worked for games. I first PS2 was originally modded with Messiah which had that system, but I doubt that chip would be compatible with a slim. It could possibly be a DMS3 via a bit of googling... But I couldn't be sure.

Isn't a DMS3, you hold circle on pad 1 to boot PS1 games on that.

The easiest and fastest way of finding out is cracking the machine open. There are far too many modchips to to determine any other way really.

Fair enough... I don't know if he could replace the chip now it's installed??

That is a possibility yes, PlayStation 2 modchips all have quite similar installs.
