dreamcast issue - advice please!

the unit runs games for for a while from cold then freezes and sometimes resets to the option screen of the dash on other occasions the game has continued to run, but the music will cut out completely. Its not the type of resetting that bending the metal prongs temp fix.

laser / pot adjustment or as i have been reading, a lid issue?

Could be a lid issue. Dreamcasts are like Lego, very easy to dismantle. Worth opening it up and taking a look at the plastic 'trigger' inside that senses whether the lid is open or closed. I had an issue with games stopping and dropping back to the main system menu a lot, when I opened it up that plastic trigger part had thick dust bunnies attached to it that were obviously messing with it. I cleaned those off and I haven't had a problem since.

Worst case scenario, new GD-ROM unit. I think the problem is as wakka describes though, give it a look.
