Nintendo 64 (JPN) on a HDTV

I'd previously just used composite into a good quality CRT, but since that died, I'm now looking at all these SCART to HDMI convertors, but not quite sure what to do with to get a decent picture out of my 1996 Japanese Nintendo 64 (not modded, so no RGB output).

    I have:
    JP Nintendo 64
    JVC HDTV
    Composite (video/audio) cable
Composite/SCART adapter block thingy (though I never actually bothered using it as it makes no difference)

I understand (unless anyone can confirm otherwise) that because these HDMI up-scalers expect/prefer an RGB signal, running my composite signal through one would look pretty crap still(?). Should I therefore get an S-Video cable, and run the S-Video signal into a HDMI converter instead? Can anyone confirm if that's gives a better picture?

Also if anyone has any recommendations and experience with these convertors for N64's, what should I go for?
    Cheers

Stick with the scaler in your TV. All the items you have suggested are awful.

If you can get it modded for RGB then it would be worth buying an XRGB Mini for it and your other systems.

The image output by the TV is really ugly unfortunately, hence why I want to see what can be done.

Going with the RGB mod and something like an XRGB Mini is going to involve a lot of time and money, so just wondered if there was anyone knew of an acceptable alternative before I start looking at that..

Rgb mod is getting much cheaper these days and much more reliable. As well as less restrictive on which console you can mod.
