PS3 BD Remote differences?

I was thinking of getting the remote for my PS3, as it'd be quite handy. However, there seem to be several variants.

I remember on the PS2 there were 3 controller variants, one of which would only work with the vanilla PS2.

Anyone know if I need to get a specific one? I have the slim PS3; not the launch model, not the recent one - the "middle one".

I have a Logitech Harmony remote for my games room upstairs and I like it so much, I bought one for the lounge!

You'll need an adapter that sits in the PS3 as it's Bluetooth and the Harmony isn't.

The original PlayStation 2 didn't have an IR unit built into it until the SCPH-5000*. Therefore earlier models come with an IR unit that plugs into a controller port. I guess the other two exclude the IR unit? I have an unopened original remote in my place and recall getting the one without IR when the SCPH-7000* was released.

As for the PS3, no you don't need a specific one. I use the original PS3 remote happily with my super slim machine. Works a charm for navigating around Crunchyroll.

As Speed says, both types of remote are compatible with all 3 types of PS3.

The second version has a slightly updated design to reflect the change from the Spiderman font and includes buttons designed more specifically for Netflix and stuff, but it doesn't make much difference really. They're both really nice remotes.

If I remember, one of thrm is bluetooth only (i.e. registers like a controller) and the other is bluetooth and has IR that will control Sony TVs and such.

I would say the latter remote has IR then. Pretty sure mine doesn't.

Yeah that's a good point Gunrock. The second version of the remote has specific buttons for controlling your TV and amp, so it's more like a universal remote. It's still not possible to control the PS3 itself via IR though, only Bluetooth (because obviously there's no IR receiver on any version of the PS3).
