    HD Audio Formats - PS3

    Hey all,

Quick question, that I think I already know the answer too but just want to check for my peace of mind.

My current AV Amp (Pioneer VSX-1019AH-K) does the usual HD Audio formats so no problems but when I'm using my PS3 (old fatty 40GB) it only shows up as PCM on the display & when I run a film with a HD Audio soundtrack it only does Dolby Digital.

Now IIRC I'm sure I read that the old fatty's don't actually do HD Audio, is this true?

    Ta muchly

As far as I know they convert the DTSHD/Dolby True HD and out put it as LPCM (lossless) - if the movie has a lossless track, you maybe need to press the audio button on your remote to select as some discs default DD (unless the movie only has a DD track). I use a launch Japanese 60 gig model and it does lossless HD audio fine.

        Thanks man

        Nope definitely by HDMi

Just reading & you're right PCM amounts to the same thing so I am getting it correctly it Just threw me that it display as PCM & not as a HD Audio track on the AMP

I'll double check the Surround options next time I fire up a disc with a HD Audio track & see what it says.

        Thanks again

That's right, the original PS3 system's can only output the HD formats as PCM. Since the slim version they have been able to bitstream - you really shouldn't notice a difference, but for my piece of mind I like it when the amp says DTS-MA etc
