My N64 arrived today. I powered it up but the led isn't glowing. Since I don't have any ntsc games yet (not yet arrived from Japan) I tried putting in a pal game to see If I'd get some sort of region lock message but there was no image. Should I be hopeful that the led is just broken? (I'm using the necessary step down converter and I have several other Japanese consoles that run just fine on it)

Omg it worked, the light is glowing. Thank you so much!!!! I exchanged the jumper pak that was in there for the European standard 4mb one and the led went on. I don't get any image on screen though with a pal game inserted, shouldn't there be some sort of region lock warning like "this game is not designed bla bla..."?

Are you sure it hasn't been modded? It's a simple job to remove part of the loading slot to accept carts from any region. Not sure about the warning message though. I've never tried putting in carts from the wrong region.
Wait, actually, I think did once by accident, but it just resulted in a black screen. Not all games would have to have it though because it would be on the cart rather than the system (the same way the memory card management thing depends on the game).

Yeah I got this mixed. Pal games physically fit in a Japanese N64 but won't play because of the lockout chip. US games WILL play on a Japanese N64, but won't fit because of the plastic tabs. I would be interested to find out if any games do have an "incorrect region" screen.
What games have you got coming for it?

Well, I tried several pal games, none give me any warning screen, not even a black screen. So now that's got me worried that my video cable doesn't work. Even though it probably does. I'll get back to you when my games arrive in about 2 weeks. I bought some of the usual suspects. Mario Kart, Donkey Kong, Kirby, Smash Brothers, Banjo Kazooie 2, ....

Usually even if you don't have a game in and you turn it on you'll get a black screen, if you play a game from a unsupported region you'll still get a black screen there is no messages that pop up if you play a pal game on a ntsc console. Well all of the games i own i have never seen one when plugging in a game from another region.
