Just in regards to what you mentioned about the Step down converter, you could get a Uk power pack for pennies, that would save you some untidy cabling.

I had no idea you could use a pal psu on a ntsc console. If I knew that I wouldn't have bothered to buy a Japanese psu.

Yup, just like mostly every other console the power supplies are interchangeable.
