    PSX problems

Dug my original PAL playstation 1 (launch system which was modded with gods know what a year or 2 after owning it) out to have ago couple of games i've not played in a while, and well it's not booting past startup on original PAL/NA/JP games and the best it i can get is on a PAL demo up to the licence warnings. the Laser seems ok, as it reads a music cd just fine and played all the tracks. Also tried the serial port xplorer cart which has a fair few save games on it and that won't boot past its own start up after the Blaze logo disappears.

Now could this be the soldering on the mod chip giving up after 18 old years and causing problems or something else? and if it is the mod chip would it be best to solder it off? (which would mean buying a kit to do so).

Have you tried it upside down or on it's side? A few ive had over the years wouldn't work unless orientated abnormally!

I'll assume you mean a SCPH-1002. The best chip for those is a Mayumi V2.1, I have one in my SCPH-1000 and it works a charm.

If you don't have a multimeter handy I'd suggest just adjusting the laser intensity, which would mean turning the dial clockwise. You don't want to go crazy though, turn maybe 20 degrees at a time. This should help, if it doesn't you might want to consider buying a PSone and stealing the laser unit from that.

Trying it upside down may also work as Baseley suggests.

Upside down was my first call to port

ta, i'll likely go with the psone suggestion and transplant the laser.
