Laptop playing silly buggers with the Interwebs

    Hey guys,

I got my lack of internet issue resolved with SKY in the end & now have their spangly Home Hub router thingy which is lush & working fine on my Tabs, Phones & PS3 BUT my laptop is being a total arse.

I have connection & everything & troubleshooter shows no issues whatsoever but when I try to load up any web page it keeps timing out & I can't see why.

The page will load instantly on every other device in the house but not on the laptop.

I can't see that anything has changed & I am at a loss.

Does anyone have any ideas what I can look at to overcome the problem?

    Ta muchly

    Try this:

Open IE, go to tools (or the cog) - internet options.
    Connections tab - Lan Settings
    Tick "Automatically detect settings"

Thanky buddy, shall try that tonight.

Assume it will be the same deal with Chrome?

Yeah Chrome piggybacks off of IE's internet connection settings, so if IE can connect so will Chrome, in theory.

Right tried all that & still nothing

Tab was already ticked to automatically detect settings so un-ticked it & then tried no change tried re-ticking & same still nothing

I am 100% at a loss with this, strangest thing ever

            This seems peculiar.

I would probably go to the manufacturer website, find your exact model and download the wi-fi/ethernet drivers for your laptop.

Then, I'd go to the device manager and uninstall the current drivers. Then I'd install the new drivers and see what's up.

              Tell me about it.

Will have to get round the parents & see if I can download them & install them from a memory stick

it's just SO strange, I can't see any options I can use anywhere to get around it.

There's also the slim possibility you have some malicious software.

Have you tried booting to safe mode (with networking)?

I haven't but will look at that.
I'll do a full virus scan tonight (on the hugely outdated software I now have as it can't update lol) just in case

                  Thanks for the help Speedy

Any difference between wifi and wired connection to your laptop?

It was ok on wired but I have no idea whats happened tonight but EVERYTHING is running fine.

I'm on the laptop now & it's all back to normal...no idea why or how but I'm a happy bunny to say the least lol

Will see what happens tomorrow now

Glad you seem to have it sorted, wife had a similar problem last week and it was the antivirus that was blocking everything.

I actually think that may have been the cause too

I'm using Bitdefender & it did a similar thing to my mum & dads a while back.

I had to turn off the SSL tick box on theirs & it cleared it.
Tried it on mine & it didn't seem to do anything but then yesterday I tried again & touch wood seems to have maybe done the trick but I will be trying again tonight just in case...fingers crossed

                            Oh good one.

We are (were) on Avast!, took off all the shields on her PC and it worked no problem, so she went over to Avira same as me.

My lappy had what seemed to be a hardware fault, as soon as the timer kicked in to blank the screen the machine crashed, tried all sorts but then noticed one of the files causing an issue was an Avast!, turned off the shields and it worked, turned back on and it crashed. So that was it decided to uninstall.
I used Windows Defender for awhile but Avira had some excellent reviews so went onto that, must admit it does seem to run quicker than when I had Avast! installed.

                            Anyway good luck with it.
