Hooking up my PS4 to my home cinema 5.1 system. Is this possible? If so, how?

    So!

I have a Sony 5.1 surround sound home cinema system, I will take photos to update this thread later on, but essentially is it possible that I can hook this up so the PS4 outputs audio to it?

The thing is, the speakers themselves came with the blu ray player and plug into the back of the system, I believe I have an optical cable input on the back of the blu ray player and I assume I can link up the blu ray player to the PS4 so the PS4 outputs sound through the speakers? But as the speakers only hook up to the blu ray system do I need to configure the PS4 to the blu ray player somehow?

I'll take photos to explain what I mean, but I am just abit confused as to how to or if its even possible to do this? I hope what I said makes sense!

    Cheers!

Easiest way: PS4 -> HDMI -> amp -> HDMI -> TV; speakers are aleays kept attached to the amp. Same thimg with an optical cable, onlu that you don't connect the amp to the TV.

If the amp/BluRay player doesn't have an HDMI input, just use optical. You then need to go into the settings on the PS4 to configure it to output audio through optical.

I use an optical cable to link the TV to the surround sound.
That way, any 5.1 audio that's sent to the telly gets output in surround sound.

That system only works if your TV is able to pass through Dolby Digital/DTS what have you correctly though. I use the optical line-out on my TV, and while it's able to push through DD5.1 and DTS from broadcast Freeview HD channels to the amp correctly, if those signals are sent from another source it strips them to stereo.

I.e. if I send DD5.1 from my PS4 over HDMI to the TV, then from the TV to the amp via optical, it will end up being stereo.

For that reason I have to send surround sound output from the PS3/PS4 to the amp directly.

          Worth bearing in mind

Oh right. Works perfectly with my PS3 and 360 for me.
I was listening to sheep baa behind me on Shaun the Sheep via Amazon Prime TV on the 360 yesterday!

Bit old for that aren't you Chimp, thought you'd have moved onto Ben 10 at least?

Yes it's a quirk of my TV (2012 Panasonic plasma). Not sure why it happens but thought it was worth mentioning.

Not just a quirk of your TV; my Sony Bravia KDL-46V4000 doesn't pass through 5.1 through the optical out, only stereo.

The last 3 TVs I've had have done that too. Stereo only

My tv doesn't pass 5.1 either. It's annoying.

Never too old for Shaun the Sheep. Even my 71 year old mum watches it.
