Crt TV any good for retro?

Opportunity to get a phillips *32PW9618*for free. 32" any use for retro? Thanks experts!

If it's 32 inch I'm guessing it's wide-screen? I would hold out for a 4:3 set mate, it's what virtually all retro games are designed for barring some PS2 gen titles.

Yeah it is a widescreen so not really suitable, tho as a tv it looks like it has some nice feature for the time like dolby sound modes/digital passthrough

Seems to be a 100Hz set. I'd check with the current owner if you could toggle that on or off myself, as I found it to be an issue when playing 60Hz games. I recall others not having the same experience as me regarding this, but I had issues although my set was a Toshiba.

Appears to have two RGB capable SCART slots and two more that can accept composite.

A CRT is a CRT so how it handles 240p/480i should be more than acceptable, as that is what it is built for.

That set is going to be quite large though, and front heavy. Make sure you have room for it.

If it's free then why not. I used a 32" widescreen Hitachi with built in deinterlacer for a long time and it was great.
The worry is the geometry on such a big screen - google for the service mode to check it's stuff that can be adjusted.

The biggest issue, is finding a mix between good geometry for 4:3 and 16:9.

Thanks chaps. Service menu is accessible so I'll see how it goes. 100Hz means no light gun games which is a shame but it's big enough that I'm hoping that 4:3 mode will still be usable.

I always just assumed 100Hz sets just switched to 120Hz for 60Hz inputs. Is that not the case, then?

If you cant turn the 100hz off, there will be screen judder when playing 60hz games. It was a total deal breaker for me, despite having a flag ship crt.

As stated, getting the geometry right is a nightmare. Two quality issues, so if your not too fussy, both issuses probably wont bother you much.

Pretty sure I used to have one of those. Only 480i max over component, nothing special.

Well I picked it up. Weighs about 80 odd kilos!

Found the service menu and fixed up the geometry and hooked up a cube, dc and a ps1.

The cube is using RGB and looks fantastic. The DC is S-Video and looks just as good. The PS1 is S-video and the only games I have are unoptimised PAL stuff so I reserve judgement there.

The TV's 100Hz mode is optional and even better than that, when it detects a 60Hz input it disables the option So, no juddering. Great colours, very deep blacks. Everything is superb. The sound is pretty incredible too. I think this thing has a subwoofer built in (according to the service menu). Not bad for free.
