Convert XVID AVI's to MP4 or other?

Hi dudes, I've got some xvid AVI's my plex /dlna set up doesn't like, can read them ok but nothing plays them (bar local playback on server)

Looking for something ideally free to convert them to a more suitable format i.e. MP4. Any suggestions?

AVI isn't a great container for streaming - it's ok if you press go and watch through, but if you pause, it will often die. And on some setups, there's stutter. As [MENTION=13863]speedlolita[/MENTION] said, handbrake will sort you out. The newer version only does mp4 output and does it very well. Older versions are a lot more versatile but quite buggy.

I suggest trying one first before starting a batch job. The sound might come out quiet so you can apply a correction.

Cheers for the tip, will try one out this weekend. They are TV shows from a few years back little bit antiquated on the file front by the looks.

Some media players can be tricked just by renaming from AVI to MP4.
