Connecting astro a50 2nd gen to pc via optical

I'm having an arse of a time trying to get these working properly with my pc's creative zxr sound card. I've got the headset and mix amp both paired and when I disable the sound card via control panel and sound plays through the headset without the dolby effect then the sound can reaching literally deafening levels. When I enable the sound card and connect via optical, I usually get no sound at all or when I do, it doesn't even get around a quarter of the volume that the headset can max at. The sound card is working, but it doesn't seem to play nice with gaming headsets. The annoying thing is I can't find any guides to connecting them on the net and the instructions that came with it only show you how to connect to an xbox one.

Any ideas?

Did you check if "use digital out for stereo streams" (or something like that) is checked somehwere in Windows' options? Where you find that option you should also find more comprehensive options for audio levels.

Shouldn't be too different with Win8 and 10.
