Why is my PC running so damn slow?

It's a 2.6GHz, 512 RAM monster. I think it has a Geforce 4 Tfi or something like that. And has a 75 Gig hardrive. I've only used 8 gigs, and it's running like a little phanny.

Takes ages to load up, and to boot up in the mornings. And programs take ages to load up. Surely it shouldn't be like this?

    Why?

What things are there on my PC I need to get rid of and the likes?

I'm on an AOL dialup if that helps.

Disk Clean up ad Disk Fragment. Run those?

      Gotcha. Will do tonight.

Actually, I haven't done those for a while. Hopefully that's why.

      Cheers boss.

Type MSCONFIG into the run box, goto startup and disable all the crap you can see in there, it should help your pc boot a bit faster. Clear the rubbish out of add/remove programs also whilst you are at it.

Check for viruses and run Spybot S&D (freeware) to remove spyware and adware. Did you recently change anything?

You may also need a priest to come round to perform a exorcism on your pc as you have AOL installed.

                    True,

AOL: The herpes of the ISP world

There are some good tools downloadable (free) from sysinternals

I'd recommend trying Autoruns from them as it gives you information about programs like gator which seem to nest themselves very deep in the registry.
