messiah chip DVD playback issue

need some help with my PS2 DVD playback. I have a Japanese console with a messiah 1 or 2 chip (not sure which).

I press the reset button twice to get it in DVD playback mode and I get the japanese text saying:

"TV System ga (kanji word I can't read) imas"

This is with any pal disc.

I try the same thing with a Hong Kong bootleg disc and it works first time.

What's going on and how do I get it to play my discs?

As i understand it you can not play Pal discs on a Jap PS2 because of the frame buffer.

Also, and this is true of my Pal chipped machine, the M2 doesnt make the DVD playback multi region - i can only play region 2 discs on mine when its in DVD mode.

jap ps2 wont play any pal dvds at all its to do with the pal 50hz thing.

yep Shimmyhill, i have to use region x on mine to use any dvds. its only the dms3 thats allows multi-region dvd playback

As has been said:

The messiah does not enable multi region DVD playback.

NTSC consoles cannot play PAL movie DVD's.
