Saturn shmup conversions, Donpachi, Dodonpachi etc.

I've been playing a few really wicked shmups on final burn recently and am considering picking them up on the saturn. Anyone know how the Saturn versions of Dodonpachi, Donpachi and Battle Garegga compare to the arcade versions?

I haven't had much of a play on them, but I've tried all three, and they seemed perfectly fine to me. Besides, the arcade versions hardly pushed CPS-2 to its limits, and I don't think the sound is emulated for Battle Garegga if I remember correctly. The Saturn versions will do you fine.

I cannot comment on Battle Garegga as im not a huge fan of Raizing shmups.

But i can say that the saturn version of donpachi is good, unless you play it in Tate you will notice the graphics arnt perfect, also the sound is a bit ropey, but the gameplay and timing is right as far as i can tell.

dodonpachi is a different ball game, the graphics arnt arcade perfect and it doesnt look as good as the PSX version, you can turn on/off 'Wait' also on the psx version.

The Saturn version has a Saturn mode (new first level and no continues) the first level is rubbish. It also has a score attack mode (3 ships only)

The display is better on the PSX version aswell, it fits everything you would see into the normal view, where as on the saturn the top is slightly cut off, but in saturn mode they removed the info bar to fit it all on the screen and moved it into the unused side area.

there are other things like pixelated explosions and the sound is worse on the saturn version, and player 1 & 2 have to be the same ship in the PSX version but i wont go into more unless you want a big read

Besides, the arcade versions hardly pushed CPS-2 to its limits
all 3 are PCB's they arnt CPS2 boards

The Saturn version of Garegga is excellent, plenty of screen options, you can change the menu text to english, you can change the colour of the bullets, etc.. loads of options that to be honest I don't know if they're in the arcade version, but they're quite welcome in the home.

The game itself plays brilliantly, and I'd highly recommend the Saturn conversion if you like the rom.

          Thanks for the replies guys

I was hoping that all 3 would be pretty much perfect conversions. Looks like I'd probably be getting Garegga and Donpachi for the Saturn, Dodonpachi sounds awful!! What is the Dodonpachi game on the PS2 like? I noticed it has a different name, with Dai Ou Jou on the end. I take it it's a tweaked version of the original?

Bah, just checked prices on PSX Dodonpachi and it seems its going to cost over ?60

I'm gonna hunt down some reviews to find out what's missing from the conversions

Also, I'd really like to play Souky which seems to be one of the shmups that everyone talks about, which I haven't had a chance to try yet. It also isn't that expensive on the Saturn. Anyone know if the arcade version emulated in any of the xbox emus?

Souky isn't emulated properly yet. The Saturn version is generally regarded as the superior port (compared to the PS1 release).

Garegga on the Saturn is an excellent conversion, with loads more options and play modes than the coin-op. There is also an option for remixed music.

Yeah, BG is really a great package. I couldn't believe it when I found all the new options, one day
