Intel Optane - what's that for then?

    This has 512 NVMe + 32 Optane.

Is that good or bad? Is windows on the Optane? Or is that just like extra ram? Or what?

Optane is Intel's proprietary storage which is very fast (faster than SSD) and expensive. In the lappy, it's probably referring to the NVME drive which uses the optane as a cache for the slower QLC NAND Flash in the drive.

I'd consider it a bit gimmicky in the lappy because you don't actually have Optane storage (a 1.5TB optane drive will set you back about £5K) - so the Optane on the drive is purely a cache to the slower (and cheap) QLC - once you hit the cache limit, writes on the QLC drives become dog slow, they're kinda waving it as a flag here to imply fast storage, which is a bit misleading trading on the Optane name.

So long as you're not writing big files it's not a problem with these drives, but their longevity is likely to be less due the quad nature of storing the data (squeezing more info into the same NAND cell). QLC does mean cheaper drives, but not without some downsides.

Having solid state drives in your PC doesn't mean you can avoid backups; a 3-2-1 back up solution is still a good idea for important data you don't want to lose. In fact, you're more likely to wake up to a dead SSD without warning than you are with a HDD, which tend to let you know they're about to fail.
