    Windows 2000 Backup

O.k. this is a bit of an odd one.

2000 backup uses a media pool for backup tapes.

I have a load of old tapes i want to use but w2k backup will only see them as unrecognized media and will not allow me to move them to Free Media.

It keeps telling the tapes are write protected. Now i suspected my Dat drive was knackered, but i have tested the unit with an Eval copy of tape ware and also have installed the old NT4 Backup program, both work fine.

    Any ideas cos i'm stumped

<unhelpful reply> Why are you using 2000 backup? Get something decent like Veritas Backup Exec </unhelpful reply>

When you say that you tested the dat drive with tape ware and nt backup, do you mean you used those tapes, or just ran a diagnostic on the drive? Just thinking these old tapes might be knackered.

Really stupid Q, but the tapes aren't set to write protected are they?

I would use Backup Exec, but i dont want to buy it !

NTBackup (nt4) works fine as it has been installed from the NT4 media, it reads and writes tapes with no problems. But i wanted to use 2k backup as it the native program with the o/s. It seems the NT4 backup solution works fine at the moment.

      Thanks for the reply anyway
