You could try using Microsoft Movie Maker (comes bundled with XP usually). Have a look under accesories on the start menu.
But the sound quality is atrocious. I tried to do something similar when I recorded from my Xbox onto the Laptop via the microphone, and some cables from the stereo output on the scart box.
I got an unbearable amount of noise. You might get the same thing when recording through the microphone. I doubt you have a line in though (neither do I)
Sound recorder will record for longer after 60s, but you have to press record every time it hits 60s.
Microsoft's aspirations to turn the P.C. into a media centre haven't been very well thought through.
I can record the audio from a DVD playing on my Xbox to a Mindisc, but I can't do the same with a Laptop and an Xbox.
Crazy.

I've been using eJay Music Cleaning Studio to transfer some of my old man's tapes to CD. (Bought it from PC World a while ago for ?20).
Been transferring the tapes to a MiniDisc via my hi-fi, then transferring the MDs to my PC via Music Cleaning Studio track-by-track, then polishing them up to reduce hiss, expand the dynamics etc. Just using the Line-In ports on my soundcard. The Studio software lets you save the tracks either as they are, or in polished form as Wave files for transfer to CD. I just use a bit of freeware to change the Wave files to MP3s for easy storage on my PC
