Is it an advert that pops up in a grey box? If so there is a really simple way to stop that, if it is what I think it is.

Norton tends to overlook a lot of viruses. Get the great AVG virusscan for free here:

Get Windows antivirus for PC & laptop: block viruses & protect against malware. Download AVG AntiVirus Free, now!

There are free updates too. I've been using it for some time and it came to the rescue whenever I needed it. My friend's Norton didn't detect anything when he had PC woes, AVG helped him out too. I can recommend it highly.

If it's the old messenger message box thing it's not a virus, it's an exploit.

You have to turn the Messenger service off in services in control panel. Set the start up option to disabled, then you won't see them anymore.

IMO the best anti virus software by a mile is Sophos.

Sophos can cause problems. Such as freezing at the control panel and other such things. Mind you Norton is equally dumb. After downloading half a gig of Far Cry, the last thing I want it to do is to scan the whole file before the thing can be properly written to disk.

More nail-biting than the game itself. Will it cock up my system and hang? Won't it?
