GBA stepdown question - settle a small dispute for me

I'm over here from Rllumk, I've pre-ordered a Famicom SP from YesAsia, and I'm sure it will need a step down transformer. Surely Japan runs on 110v we run on 220v, a stepdown would be needed?

Somebody in a thread over there reckons that you don't need to. Myself and several others pointed out that it would physically fit, but surely it would destroy the gameboy? Are we being too cautious? Or will it need a stepdown? Sure, the voltage is dropped to 5.2v through the charger, but my uk one is rated for 230v, and if you plugged a Japanese one in it would damage the charger if not the gameboy

Can anybody tell me for sure?

    Ta

EDIT: BTW I did read the faq, and I'm sure I'm right, it's just that this guy said he had done it himself, and it threw me a bit

I'd have thought you would need a stepdown so it could be plugged into the wall socket. Those 2 pin JPN plugs are a bitch to stick in directly.

Far as i am aware you dont need one, as obv the GBA has no PSU.

I know it works with US >< UK

And it works with All Gamecubes

      So i would say:

      YES

lol @ rllmuk comment. Cant you find some decent people there?

Edit: We are talking about switching the power cable for a UK one, correct?

You could adapt the pins quite happily with a 2-3 pin convertor, but it wouldn't affect the voltage.

Would the solution be to use my uk one, as it drops down to 5.2v?

BTW, Rllmuk people are great, very knowledgable, but I wanted a second opinion from here.

        Rather than Gamesradar

Why not just buy a UK charger from game for about ?7 and not bother with stepdowns???

Yep. Any old uk gba charger will do. But if you insist on using the one that comes with it, you will need to plug it into a stepdown.

I have a "universal" power supply at home, for my laptop. It takes a standard power lead and adjusts automatically (with a load "click" when used with a different power supply). Maybe something magical happens inside the GBA adaptor, although I seriously doubt it. Just speculation on my part

This thread was asking if this was possible, or indeed wise.

It seems like it should work, thanks for your input everybody

I run both my Japanese SP's off UK chargers.

Fantastic, just what I needed to know :-) I'll whack it straight into my uk charger

I wanted to know this too. I was 99% certain but wanted a bit of validation before I get my Famicom SP

I'm probably being very over-cautious but...

I've just bought this . Can someone please confirm that this will this definitely work ok with a JPN GBA SP?

                        Thanks
