prince of persia sand of time - hint needed

i am stuck in the room you enter just after meeting the beetles (for the 1st time?).
just seen the sand of time being carried by some winged beasts.

ok, so I jump across a gap, bit of wall running, jump from pillar to pillar.. basically doing an anti-clockwise circuit of the room, up this column of rock swing across a couple of flagpoles, more pillars, and end up on the ledge just to the left (i.e. clockwise) of where I first entered the room.

it looks like I should be able to jump / run or something to a small set of ledges on the wall, and lower myself down to the next level... but i can't do it.

i am heading the right way?
