Didn't shut down properly, XP not happy

My laptop is in a bad way.

Despite knowing better, early this evening I didn?t shut XP down properly. I pushed the off switch without logging off etc. Mistake.

On reloading I was met by the blue ?Scan Disk? screen (not called anymore, but you get the idea). After a long time of checking it told me that Simon.dat.log (or something like that) was corrupt and therefore deleted, as was the whole contents of /windows/apppatch. Bugger.

I guess that Simon.dat.log has something to do with my user profile under XP, because all my settings were gone ?or rather moved. XP had made a new folder called Simon.SIMON in documents and settings, and all my old data was in one called Simon.

Feeling cavalier about it all (I was pissed off) I just moved all my data/music to Simon.SIMON and deleted Simon. Is there anything else I might need to consider about my XP profile? Everything seems to work now (expect my cookies, which didn?t like being moved).

But? the folder /windows/apppatch is empty. I don?t want the bother of a reinstall, but I guess that XP probably needs this folder for something or other. I think that /apppatch has something to do with compatibility, but I?m no expert. Everything seems to be running ok ?which is odd. Can XP really be so bloated that a whole important looking folder can be deleted and nothing bad happen? Can I get the contents of apppatch from somewhere else?

Any advice would be greatly welcome.

    Apppatch only contains 11 files:

    AcGenral.dll
    AcLayers.dll
    AcLua.dll
    AcSpecfc.dll
    AcVerfyr.dll
    AcXtrnal.dll
    apphelp.sdb
    apph_sp.sdb
    drvmain.sdb
    msimain.sdb
    sysmain.sdb

If you're feeling paranoid I can email them to you, they're only 900kb compressed.

Edit, judging from this it's not a crucial folder and can be deleted:

Yes, please do. Replacing them is problably the thing to do.

I have XP Home Version 2002. If you have the same version, I'd very grateful if you could email them to me. I've not done any Windows updates either.

Anyone see a problem with just replacing the contents of the folder?

I've got XP Pro, but the files are identical in Home. Give me your email addy and I'll send them your way.

In Windows power options set your PC to shut down when you press the power button.
This performs a proper safe shutdown (just like clicking shutdown etc)

If this is already set then for some reason this doesnt work properly on your PC. Afaik this is part of the acpi spec so most modern PC's should be able to handle it.

Thanks, I've set it to that now. It was on "Ask what to do", but that clearly had no effect.

Anyway, everything seems fine, and apart from the hassle of having to re-set all the preferences within Windows (which got wiped), no dammage was done.
