Taiko no tatsujin drum problem. any idea??

I've noticed when playing taiko that the drum isn't registering my hits every now and then. Is there a place on the drum where you are supposed to hit, or are all the drums like this. I seem to have no problem with the sides just seems to be the drum face itself.

I have hardly used the drum and it hasn't been battered.

Does it sound like my drum is faulty.

Any idea??

Hit just left and just right of centre, down the middle isn't as sensitive.

Also hit it fairly hard, pussy hits don't count :P

Pussy offting around for fear of damaging the drums is no way to play it. Ideally you should work up a sweat and have the neighbours calling the police.
