XP + FTP software i.e Kazaa etc.

I did have an old version of Kazaa which I hadnt used in a while. I tried to use it recently and it wouldnt open. All it would do is put a icon box on the start bar and nothing else would not open at all.

I deleted it and went to download a new version and decided to get another programme going by the name if "Ares".

It work great and is much better than Kazaa(no ads etc) until now. I closed it down earlier and now I have the same problem I had with Kazaa(not opening).

I uninstalled it and tried to delete all trace and d/l again but I cant even delete this. It tells me that access is forbidden??.

I am now of the persausion that the problem may be XP or a virus. Thing is I downloaded a few things from Ares with no problems.

Anyone got any advice.

Firstly make sure all traces of KaZaA and Ares are completely uninstalled. Then:

1. Do a cntl-alt-del and see if KaZaA/Ares is/are running in the background. End task/process if they are.
2. Scandisk and deframent.

If that doesn't work try a viruscan or a system restore.

You shouldn't be using KaZaA anyway, if you're going to download stuff use Bit Torrent or KaZaA lite. (if you can find the latter)

Also, I wouldn't say KaZaA is a FTP, but thats me.

KAzaa lite is still availible on their site but you have to pay for it now, I think it used to be free though Im not sure. It cost $26 per month.

I'll do what you have advised tonight and let you know how I get on.

I think I have found the cause of the problem.

as you said I checked the task manager and it seems that "Ares" is not shutting down and still running. I then ended the process in the task manager and it opens no problem.

The only thing is that i have to end it in task manager every time I want to open it after closing it down previously. Not perfect I know but I can live with it.

I also defragged and has helped alot witht he speed of the PC overall. Are you supposed to do this every month or something.

Geo-V6 you should defrag regularly, preferably every one to two weeks if you do lots of installs/save lots of files/uber geek/whatever in my humble opinion.

Also, if you're running windows, partition the little bugger. 10 GB for the OS and programs, split the rest up into partitions how you want. That way you can defrag quicker and it just seems to run faster. So if you've installed outlook 2003 and office 2003 (take my advice - don't), you can just defrag the C drive with all the programs on without having to defrag the drive with all the music on.

I am a partition convert. I accidentally accessed the Recycler folder in CMD the other day on one drive, so all I had to do was copy the stuff across to a redundant partition, format the corrupted partition and problem solved.

People who ask you to pay for Kazaa Lite are just trying to scam you. You should never have to pay for what is a VERY free piece of software.

If you don't have any luck with that, try Soulseek (www.slsk.org) or eMule (http://www.emule-project.net/)

Right I have now got Kazaa lite 2.3.4 and its doing the exact smae thing as normall kazaa I had previoulsy.

I have dleted Kazaa normal and run Ares with no probs so I at a loss as to why this is happening.
