is ikaruga as boring as radiant silvergun?

i had silvergun on its release for the saturn and love shooters

and found it to be one of the most tedius and downright boring shootemups ever, weird that such a game got so hyped at all, let alone overhyped (i do like treasure games btw, but even they have released a good few turkeys in their time..)

anyhow i did buy ikaruga on dc still sealed, but gave it to a mate as i didnt have the time to play it ..

thought i might finally get round to playing it on gcube , but want to know if it really is any good or do sites say it is just in reverence to silvergun?

(btw have 26 years of gaming behind me, and i love shooters, wish that espgaluda was coming to gc as well as p****e2...)

I think you'd have to explain why you didn't like RSG. The general framework in Ika is similar but different. It retains the idea of using certain weapons to destroy certain enemy types in the way you have to use the monochrome bullets to keep chains going. And it has a similar degree of thought behind level layout, as well.

All in all, Ikaruga is a sequel in spirit if not exact design, and I'd seriously doubt you'll like it if you don't like RSG.

One thing Ikaruga isn't and that's boring.
      Order of bestesness.

DC Version (Jap only) with a VGA box and an upturned VDU
      GC Version Jap
      GC Version US
      GC Version PAL

      You know it makes sense.

I understand where your coming from, i also found RS boring as hell, i much preffer the style of more traditional manic shooters like batrider, esprade dodonpachi etc.

And i have to say i thought that Ikaruga was a better experience than RS but i still didnt find it anywhere in the league of cave/raizing games, but i am a bit biased being a bit of a cave fanboy

heh in a word.. bosses! and an over finicky firepower system

also the boring cgi sequences just got in the way..

boss after boss, too much time thinking about linking chains and changing weapons

damn if i want to think in a game i`d play a rpg or rts !

on the saturn the best shmup was layersection imho.. and there was a ton of good ones to choose from!

at the mo i`m hugely into caves shooters espgaluda and the new do don pachi

never really bothered with cave/raizing in the past , man i have a lot to catch up on ^^

i know theres tons of shooters on the ps1/2 but never been a fan of the ****estation , so may do a run on the 2nd hand shops when ps3 comes out and will most likely only use it for shooters..

sold all my systems ages ago (pretty much every system from binatone pong up to ps2 ) along with one of the best games collections in europe possibly when we moved to japan as we didnt have the space and i kind of went through a period of complete apathy with modern gaming as a whole..

now i`ve bought an x box from Geezer i can use that as a mame rig for gaming sessions with mates, saves the hassle of a pc, and a gamecube cos it seems like there really are a load of games worth playing on that..

been playing since pong and a game has to be FUN! silvergun looked great, had some nice ideas, but ultimately was tedious , unforgiveable really..

cave are greeeeat ^^ i`d also kill for a modern update to cocoron on pce engine tho ^^ and maybe a sweet galaga 04! ??

If you have an xbox thats chipped, get a copy of FBA-X you can then play the roms of most raizing games upto dimahoo and some of the cave games (donpachi, dodonpachi, esp.ra.de, guwange and dangun feveron)

if you have a GC give shikigami no shiro II and star soldier a try. If you want cave goodness though get a PS2 its got dodonpachi dai-ou-jou and will have esp.galuda in may

i also think layer section is one of the saturns better shmups but i have to rate dodonpachi as probably the best.

if your in japan? theres plenty of good shmups to be found, pick up a cheap saturn and try gunbird, Sengoku Blade(personal fave) 1945 series, souky etc.

Excellent, another shooter fan who doesnt like RS. Welcome to the club dude!

I disliked RS for the exact same reasons, overly complex weapons system, bosses that were way to complex to crack, and a combo system that punished destroying all the enemies. In the end my mind was spinning trying to juggle so much info.
Also, way too many levels, I never completed the game, but when it started to drag on past the 40 minute mark I started to get bored.

Heck, my copy is even up for sale in the trade forum at a grossly inflated price!

I bought Ikaruga on its day of JPN release for the DC, and I only bought and played RS a few months later. Didnt like it at all, played it about 4 times.

I think youll quite like ikaruga, its a far more digestible game.
No cut scenes, completable in 20 mins, combo system that allows and encourages detsurction of every enemy(still bloody tricky though), very much simplified weapon system. 5 wholsesome levels, and bosses that make sense.

1 fire button. 1 change button. 1 super fire button that needs charging.
Switch colours to absorb enemy fire, and make yours stronger.

For my taste, it was a far easier game to absorb and simply take in.
Thereby my enjoyment of it was much greater.

I didnt like RS but did like Ikaruga. So there are some who like one and not the other.

              Goodluck and happy shmuping.
