will US ps2 games work on my jap ps2?

sounds stupid, but i have a first gen, and i remember hearing you could play US dvds on the system no probs... i know this works

dont think i can play US PS2 games but thought id see what everyone says?
wouldnt mind a couple of games that i cant get for my jap unit!
