    ADSL Router Advice

Wanted a 2nd opinion on this ADSL BB Router before I splash the cash - http://www.dsl-warehouse.co.uk/produ...r=DG834&pm=415 - I have BT Broadband and so would need to connect it via RJ11 cable. This one has a built in modem, does anyone have experience of this? If I could dispense with the BT Frog modem then it would be a bonus.

    All info appreciated.

We have the BT Voyager 2000 set up with a wireless network. Id give that one a look seeing as you have BT Broadband as thats really why we went with it so we had it all by BT should problems arise. Your router link seems to be well priced though.

Hmm, was pondering that one myself. Was a toss up between that one and the d-link 504, though I see the Netgear has come down in price a fair bit since I last looked. Would also appreciate comments.

I think Ill buy this today Stu and let you know. I am very tempted to go wireless also, but I think Ill wait on that just now as I cant justify the additional expense just now, this should do me well in the meantime.

          SuperStu,

I have the DLink DSL 504 and it's mostly great but only when you have up to date firmware. I daresay the issue has been fixed but for me to upgrade the firmware in mine I first needed to downgrade... this was needed to fix a bug in it that crashed the box when some apps tried to use UPnP like MSN file transfers.

Since the upgrade it's been working without a hitch serving 3 wired PCs and with an added 3Com WAP 2 wireless PCs.

          Marcus,

A friend of mine has that Netgear and he's well-happy with it. Never used it myself though.

I use this ugly beast for my BT Broadband on my mac and it works flawlessly. The inbuilt modem works fine and I always seem to be able to get top speeds from it when downloading. The firewall is cumbersome to change but with a bit of patience can be done.

I ordered mine from the site I linked too and they offer good support.
            Might be worth a try.

Marcus, funny you should mention that, I remember now that it was the wireless version of the netgear I was looking at, for about ?130. Add in a wlan usb thing though and it bumps the price up a fair bit over wired :/ Perhaps get that and add a WAP to it later. Be interested to hear your thoughts on it tho.

Valken, cheers for that. Think I'll see how Marcus gets on with this.

I'm with Stu, adding a WAP later is better than buying an all in one box IMO.

There *is* a space consideration but its nice to be able to upgrade as wireless tech progresses.

I recently changed from an 802.11b-based Airport Base Station to an 802.11g 3Com model without having to get a new ADSL Modem/Router combo... saved a nice bit of cash.

Stu, The ?130 netgear you're on about (DG384G) is the one I use.. Its feature packed and works like a dream, you can do it cheaper but its nice to have it all in one sexy silver box (and more importantly to me - only using one power point!).

Anyway all in all I'm extremely happy but if you have any questions about the netgear feel free to ask..

I have the Netgear DG834G and it is excellent. No problems whatsoever, very quick to setup, loads of features and great security. Also easy to use - i managed to teach my dad to log into it to check the connection status.

Once you go wireless you wont go back. If you are online with all your consoles then just get one wireless bridge for them all, then you can play online anywhere in your house (or garden)

Thought I'd ask here instead of making a new thread:

I've got BTopenworld ADSL 512kbs with 'the green frog' modem.

I'm not too hot on the tech' of wireless routers, but wondered if I need a certain type of wireless router to use with this.
I have one PC at the moment I wanna connect wirelessly, and want to add another PC wirelessy later on.

I basically want a modem/router thing which connects to the ADSL phone socket , then the things which connect to the PCs right?
Is it easier to have USB adaptors connected to the PCs rather than those wireless PCI cards?

Tom it sounds like this Netgear would work great for you. It plugs into the adsl socket and you can then either hang PC's off it using the 4 port hub or you can put a wireless receiver in your PC or laptops and hook it up that way.

The Netgear does the business for me. I hang 2 PC's off it using cables and then the xbox, ps2 & gc are connected via a wireless bridge and a hub.

It's dodle to set up but you will have to get into the practise of opening ports on the firewall for things like steaming media.

You can also stream mp3's and DivX from your PC onto your xbox and watch/play them on your TV.

                          Cheers

I got the DG814, older version of the DG834. I have used both though as my g/f's brother uses the 834. And so far they have both been rock solid, i've used mine for over a year now and his has been running for 3 months.

                            Extremely good so far

Amazingly, this turned up today (I only ordered it on Friday!).

1st impressions are very good, it took me about 20 minutes to set the IP addressing up (its my first time using static IPs) and it was very straightforward. Built in firewall functionality has meant I can remove all the software firewalls I have on my systems, I have done a port scan and was pleased to find no vunerabilities. All in all after VAT this cost me about ?100, and so far at least, Im very pleased with the Router and the service from this company.
