yea, some sorta slow jaggy sound.

its almost like the tray is hitting both sides constantly on its way out....

Yep, mine does that. And my brothers.
Another shining example of Sonys build quality.

You can't, really - the PS2 tray runs out on a white plastic guide over a spiral threaded bar - if it's juddering on the way in and out, it's because the plasitc guide thing is worn. This happens in PS2s less than a few months old, but is accelerated by dust and grime etc.

It's just that - poor $ony build quality

Yeah I've had this too, although for me it was a precursor for more problems to come. After it had been happening for a few months my PS2 stopped loading up games. Just like that. I'd put a game disc in and it would go straight to the Browser screen, making some awful sounding grinding noises along the way. I phoned Sony and got the usual prices for replacement/repair, but to their credit the guy suggested a lens cleaner disc first (yeah I know duh! but there you go, I'm a technophobe at heart). And good on him too, it seemed to do the trick, mostly. Occaisionally it doen't work (very frustrating, PES3 is ruling my spare time currently) but if I leave it switched off for an hour or so it seems to right itself. I've had it a few years so it's out of warranty, and been flogged, think I might open it up & dust it out at some time.

              Anyway, I waffle. T'ra.

If you're lucky, the "awful grinding noises" might signify a potentially repairable problem.

The lens is attached (well, on the few PS2s that I've looked at) to a piece of plastic with a groove on it, which is moved via a worm gear.

If the groove/worm gear is dirty or worn, it can end up jumping over the worm gearing producing the grinding noise.

If you give the groove a bit of a clean, lubricate the worm gear with some silicon grease, and maybe even remove the piece of plastic, warm it up (heat from a soldering iron or something), and bend it downwards slightly to increase the tension on it, you might find that your PS2 will work ok afterwards.

                  Cheers Yod@

Think I'll give that a try. Prodding with what is for me expensive technictrickery is usually a no no, but I've been thinking of going for a new PS2 anyway, may as well give that a whirl first, see if I can break my kak-handed record
