Japanese PS2 DVD problem

I have just got a Japanese PS2, and I wanted to see the bonus DVD that came with Psyvariar but it doesn't let it play it. A screen comes up and says something like "the DVD player is not enabled".

I thought DVD playback would be the same as it is with the PAL models (i.e. no problem), so how can I sort this out?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Don't the DVD drivers have to be downloaded to a memory card for the japanese PS2?

And how would I go about doing this?

I am sure it is probably quite simple, but I have no idea what to do
